1. Feedback - Introduction

Feedback is essential to the learning process. The most efficient learning environment is created when both positive and negative feedback is provided to the learners. Providing accurate positive and negative feedback:

  • Provides the learner with a realistic estimate of their understanding. Through feedback, the learner is able to get a clear picture of how well they were able to understand and implement the practice, procedure or skill.

  • Increases the trainer's confidence in how well he is getting the message across. Quality implementation of the practice, procedure or skill by the learner tells the trainer that he/she was able to provide the information in such a manner that the learner was able to implement it. Conversely, if learners are consistently unable to implement the skills it may be necessary for the trainer to make modifications in the training.

  • Decreases the amount of time to master a skill. By giving the learner specific feedback on what they did well and specific recommendations for improvement the learner is able to master the skill at a faster rate.
