Step one      Identify Needs

Before we delve into this practice exercise, let's back-up for just a few minutes to consider the needs assessment. You will remember that the first step in the TRIM process is to identify needs. There are any number of ways to do this, both formally and informally. Some districts ask teachers and other district personnel to assess their professional needs on a regular basis and it is with the help of this information that the school/district establishes professional development plans each year.

For the purposes of this tutorial, assume that your fictional district has already conducted an assessment of needs. The need for this PE curriculum was determined following a consideration of;

  1. the results of this assessment
  2. a review of the district goals and program monitoring results, and
  3. an examination of issues from the field of PE.
