This article discusses the diagnosis and treatment of alcohol and drug disorders in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Special considerations in the treatment of addiction in TBI patients due to cognitive and emotional problems arising from the brain damage are described. Recommendations are provided for clinical application and long term recovery for the addicted TBI patient. These questions include how brain injury and substance abuse can be problematic, how children and adolescents and their families might respond to substance abuse concerns, and what proactive suggestions can be made for families and children regarding education, intervention, or prevention of substance abuse in children with acquired brain injury. |
