Strategies for Classroom Based Personnel

  • Get involved in professional development opportunities

  • Facilitate student responsibility for accepting leadership from alternate staff so that you have the opportunity to leave the classroom when necessary.

  • Be an advocate for yourself and your profession.

  • Read literature and the latest research. Be informed.

  • Don't compromise the quality of your work by overextending yourself.

  • Learn to evaluate the appropriateness of your employment site.

  • Engage in conversation with general education professionals to learn about what they think they need to know.

  • Volunteer to be a conduit to educate other school personnel regarding special education issues.

  • Ensure you are communicating with external constituents, including parents and community resource representatives.

  • Capitalize on opportunities for positive visibility within and outside of your school.

"I noticed that our county was having a health career fair to introduce middle school youth to various professions...I thought it would be important for students to learn about the opportunities for speech language pathologists to work in schools. I Asked my principal if I could participate in the fair."

"I developed and conducted 'chat and choose' sessions for both my team and school staff who expressed interest in particular special education topics."

"I look for opportunities on the world wide web to promote activities that are going on in my classroom."
