In the Beginning

The following strategies can be used by both mentor teachers and by administrators
to assist the beginning teacher to be successful.

Mentor Teacher

Administrator

  • Managing Resources
    • Provide a list of instructional materials and their location.
    • Encourage beginning teachers to consult with experienced teachers about materials and their use.
  • Managing the Workload
    • Offer assistance and share techniques for resolving scheduling conflicts.
    • Provide orientation and procedures for completing paperwork.
    • Develop a calendar with due dates for an easy reference.
    • Supply curriculum guides and information for developing/using IEP's.
    • Discuss and reinforce the beginning teacher's role as an advocate for exceptional students.
  • Collegiality
    • Include the beginning special educator in activities with both regular and special education faculty.
  • Achievement and Recognition
    • Provide informal feedback regularly.
  • Managing Resources
    • Encourage and support sharing of material among teachers.
    • Provide a central location and check-out procedures for materials.
  • Managing the Workload
    • Provide orientation and procedures for completing paperwork.
    • If possible, assign the beginning teacher a lighter caseload and avoid assigning extra duties.
    • Discuss and reinforce the beginning teacher's role as an advocate for exceptional students.
    • Minimize shifts in caseload, if possible.
  • Collegiality
    • Set aside specific time for collaboration with the mentor and with other teachers.
  • Achievement and Recognition
    • Hold a conference to explain evaluation procedures.
    • Explain how evaluations will reflect hisi/her work with exceptional students
    • Discuss the results of the evaluations fully. Provide specific suggestions and encouragement.
