Known for it's scenery and varied recreational opportunities,
the Columbia Gorge/Mt. Hood region has a strong economy based on agriculture,
forest products and industry. Located in northern Oregon along the
southern bank of the Columbia River, the gorge is an area
with rich historical interest. Early pioneers traveling to Oregon
viewed Mt Hood and the gorge not
as scenic treasures, but as a choice between risking the rapids
and floating down the Columbia to Fort Vancouver,
or challenging the mountain on the overland route.
