NEA and Teacher Recruitment: An Overview
http://www.nea.org/student-program/about/overview.html
American public schools reflect diversity only in their student populations, not in their teaching force. Despite efforts by some school districts to hire minority teachers, most have faculties that are overwhelmingly white. This article from The National Education Association (NEA) offers reasons for the decline in the number of minority teachers and strategies for the identification, recruitment and retention of minority teachers.

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association
Problems shared by large city school districts were addressed by the Urban Teacher Collaborative, which consists of Recruiting New Teachers, Inc.; the Council of the Great City Schools; and the Council of the Great City Colleges of Education. These groups work together to improve the quality, diversity, and cultural sensitivity of the nation's urban teacher workforce. In 1998-1999, the Urban Teacher Collaborative conducted surveys of districts to obtain information about immediate and anticipated demand for teachers, recruitment strategies, and targeted recruitment pools (Urban Teacher Collaborative, 2000). The most frequently used recruitment strategies of 39 city districts that responded to the Urban Teacher Collaborative study are included.

Judith Torres, Janet Santos, Nancy L. Peck, Lydia Cortes (2004)
Minority Teacher Recruitment, Development, and Retention is a comprehensive review of research and practice that summarizes recent research on the contributions of diverse teachers to the education of both white and minority students. The report points to major obstacles faced by minorities in the "teacher preparation pipeline" from high school into the teaching profession, and provides useful examples of effective supports that can motivate and prepare minorities to succeed in high school, in college, and in the classroom. This is a useful resource for both educators and researchers, with rich examples of effective programs and practices, brief summaries of cited articles and studies, and an extensive bibliography.
