  1. Solicit Mentor Nominations
    Criteria for successful mentor teacher candidates include:
    • Completion of three years of successful teaching experiences.
    • Above average performance in evaluations.
    • High recommendations from principals and peers.
    • Same or similar licensure as the novice teacher.
    • High rating in number and type of mentor attributes.

  2. Interview Potential Mentors
    The following are possible interview questions.
    1. What motivates you to serve as a mentor?
    2. Are you willing to mentor a novice teacher for a __ year period?
    3. What professional development activities have been meaningful to your growth?
    4. How can you support novice teachers while challenging them to grow?
    5. What are some tips that you can provide the novice teacher in organizing for the first day of school?
    6. How will you be able to provide support and encouragement to the novice teacher in their first year of teaching?
    7. What are some methods you can use to assist the novice teacher having difficulties with student behavior?
    8. What are some traits or attributes that you will use as a mentor in supporting the beginning teacher?

  3. Provide Mentor Training
    In evaluative studies, the most common feedback from mentors is the need for training and support in their new roles. There are numerous mentor training programs which have been developed. Most of them include the following components:
