C. Oregon Survey on Supporting and Retaining Special Educators - Background
The purpose of this section of the tutorial is to acquaint participants with what Oregon special educators have said are helpful supports. Providing this information will both validate national research and provide insights into additional kinds of supports Oregon special educators have identified as being helpful.
Fully interactive pivot tables containing this information can be downloaded from the Recruitment and Retention website.
Throughout this section, please refer back to items presented and generated in previous sections as an opportunity to reinforce or validate supports or suggest that caution might be in order in implementing certain supports based on what Oregon findings have told us.
Introduction and Background
The Oregon Special Education Survey was conducted with 265 special educators in their first or second year at their current position. Participants included teachers, speech-language-pathologists, school psychologists, administrators, therapists and consultants. The purpose of this survey was to provide feedback and direction to the recruitment and retention efforts within Oregon.
Providing effective orientation activities, initial supports and addressing school climate can do a lot to overcome the day to day challenges facing special educators. You as administrators do have control over many of these things, though certainly there are logistical and resource challenges involved. On the following screens we will examine:
- Findings related to orientation
- Findings related to the Provision of Initial Supports
- Findings related to Ongoing Supports and Working Environment.
- Findings related to Administrative Support
