  • TEACH-M: A pilot study evaluating an instructional sequence for persons with impaired memory and executive functions
Anterograde memory impairment and dysexecutive syndrome often co-occur as a result of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and significantly impact the ability to learn new concepts and carry out multi-step procedures [1–4]. Learning to operate a new appliance or plan a social engagement is prohibitive when a person cannot lay down new memories and act upon intentions. While there is a wealth of information on instructional methods for students with this cognitive profile due to developmental disabilities [5, 6], surprisingly little work has been done to evaluate instructional practices with the brain injury population. The current pilot study sought to build upon existing work in order to develop and evaluate an instructional package effective for teaching new procedures to people with acquired impairments in memory and executive functions.

  • The longitudinal effects of accessible email for individuals with severe cognitive impairments
Electronic communication has provided as unprecedented means of networking people for business, educational, and social purposes. However, this mainstream form of communication remains largely inaccessible to individuals with severe cognitive-communicative disabilities. This report describes the longitudinal effects of using an adapted email interface by individuals with severe cognitive disabilities due to brain injury.
