Oregon's Instructional Assistants

At this time, Instructional Assistants are not required to go through the Authorization process.

Who are Instructional Assistants?
Paraprofessionals are an essential part of the EI/ECSE service delivery system. Other titles used in addition to "assistant" include: paraeducator, paraprofessional, teacher aide, teacher assistant, teacher associate, and instructional aide.

What requirements apply to Instructional Assistants?
According to Oregon Administrative Rule 581-15-1100, EI and ECSE assistants shall:

  • be at least 18 years old
  • have a high school diploma or equivalent experience working with young children
  • have a professional development plan based on the content of the EI/ECSE competencies

How to develop a professional development plan (PDP)?
Each EI/ECSE contractor has its own individual policy and procedure related to the EI/ECSE assistant professional development plan requirement. EI/ECSE assistants should discuss the requirement with their immediate supervisor and follow the contractor's ODE approved policy and procedure.
